History: Shatterstar on Comic Vine. X-Factor Investigations history.
Presentation: If there’s one thing that Shatterstar has, it’s personality. As a genetically engineered half mutant gladiator from an alternate dimension set in the future that worships televesion, he’s already more then a little weird. Take a moment to read that sentence again, because every little bit of it is just as strange as Shatterstar is. The way that Shatterstar acts has a lot to do with the place that he came from. An evil tyrannical ruler named Mojo took control of the world and universe that he comes from, and Mojo uses television to control his subjects. Think of him as a crazy producer of a TV show, or a news network. To keep control, he needs to make sure that the shows that people watch are ones that will always be entertaining and exciting, and will keep them glued to the TV 24/7. Shatterstar “grew up” in this world, not as a viewer, but as entertainment.
And as any good entertainer knows, people like you when you’re personable, and good at what you do. Shatterstar is a gladiator who loves fighting. He’s one of the best fighters that anyone has ever seen, and while he was forced to fight, he grew to love the thrill of combat. He is always ready to test his skills against someone new, and has gone out of his way to pick a fight when one wasn’t really needed. He does live by an honor code, though. To him, fighting without honor, or killing someone without it is one of the worst things you could do in life. Shatterstar does everything at full tilt, and he never hesitates in battle. Killing is not something that bothers him, and he can be a little blasé about it to people. It’s just a fact of life where he’s from, and it definitely shocks people at times, but then, a lot about Shatterstar shocks people at times.
That would also be because he is absolutely and utterly clueless when it comes to being in social situations. The man is honest to a fault, and has no filter when he speaks. This rarely comes off as cruel, however, just mostly tactless and very, very annoying, especially when he keeps doing it time and time again. There is a lot that he doesn’t seem to understand, and one of the things is why people are so uncomfortable with certain subjects, when he doesn’t see a point to being uncomfortable. Shatterstar isn’t easily embarrassed, which is good because he makes a spectacle of himself all the time.
This doesn’t make him an idiot, though. Shatterstar is very intelligent (by design, but in the end it doesn’t really matter, does it?), and when it’s not dealing with social cues, can figure things out very quickly. He can rebuild alien technology after only briefly looking at it, and can learn things just from watching the on TV, like speaking Spanish and doing choreographed dances from famous movies. Shatterstar is very curious about everything, and will ask questions that might not be related to one another, or are about things that are fairly obvious to everyone else, but he is always friendly about it. And the man is friendly, quick to make friends, and always ready to lend a hand when needed. He is also loyal to his friends and teammates, and if you’re in a fight, you clearly want this gladiator on your side, not the other.
Finally, in regards to his sexuality, he is all over the place with it. Currently in a relationship with Julio Richter aka Rictor, he wants to be in an open relationship. If he meets someone new that he finds attractive, he won’t hesitate to kiss them as a way of introducing himself to them. Sex is also something he enjoys having, and if he has his way, he will have it with as many people as possible. Making friends and flirting with them is standard for Shatterstar, and it’s now become his default mode. Again, it’s all a part of the spectacle he creates in public, for everyone to see.
Motivations: This spectacle, however, is created for a reason. As said before, Shatterstar was raised on a world that almost worships television. Everything about what he does is related to that; the way he dresses, speaks, acts, even fights, is done with the idea that someone is watching him. For most of his life, that’s how it was. People were watching him fight in the gladiator arenas, and gladiators were expected to act a certain way. What makes it a little more humorous is that the way that Shatterstar acts now is not the way that he used to act before, while on Mojoworld. Back home, he was very stoic, the eponymous, stereotypical soldier. No emotions whatsoever, he was a warrior, and that was it. It was only when he came to Earth that he began to feel things.
He always did have a strong sense of right and wrong, though. He may have been a slave, but when he had the ability to just take his freedom and run, he stayed to fight against the evil ruler, Mojo. He ended up joining the Cadre Alliance, which was one of the reasons why he came to Earth in the first place. Doing all of that was his first step to independence, and that’s one of the things that Shatterstar does not want to give up, once he got it. Yes, being a soldier and following orders is what’s easiest for him, and it’s what he can be best at. But when he joined X-Factor Investigations, he did it both because he wanted to be near Rictor, his best friend, but also because he wanted to. Being able to make choices is a big deal for him, seeing as he didn’t have any for so long.
This goes into relationships as well. Relationships are confusing for most people, but when you’re Shatterstar, they’re almost incomprehensible. Being an emotionless warrior doesn’t prepare you for anything having to do with making friends and having relationships with people, sexual or otherwise. His time on Earth showed him how people become friends with each other, how they learn to love and care for other people, and it’s why he has friends in the first place. His loyalty to his friends is absolute. The concept of not being there for your friends is one that he finds baffling; he will always have someone’s back, whether they need it or not.
But there is one person who is more important to Shatterstar then anyone else in his life, and that is his long time friend, and boyfriend, Julio Richter aka Rictor. Their friendship is the reason why Shatterstar is the way he is now. He was his first friend, and the one there when his emotions started to develop. It’s obvious that he loves him, and that the feelings he has for him are deep and long lasting. There is no doubt in is mind that he will never feel the same way for another person as he does for Rictor, and while he has friends, none of them have the same emotional hold on him as his boyfriend does. But when you’ve lived most of your life as an asexual warrior being, suddenly having these emotions opens up a whole new world of possibilities. This is where his sexuality becomes a problem. Shatterstar doesn’t see any issues with having sex with whoever he wants to, kissing people when he first meets them (full on tongue kissing, not a casual peck on the cheek), or even propositioning them while his boyfriend is standing right behind him. Sex and emotions do not go hand in hand in his mind, and this puts a strain on his relationship with Rictor, who would rather he not do those things because he wants a monogamous relationship.
But Shatterstar doesn’t quite understand why Rictor is upset about him doing those things. He wants to be able to explore all of these new things in him, such as desire for sex, and the world of romance. Jealousy doesn’t make much sense to him when it has to do with the physical things. So while his boyfriend might be jealous about him having sex with other people, Shatterstar is jealous about Rictor’s emotional attachments to other people. He doesn’t understand his own emotions, let alone other people’s, which is why he needs his boyfriend by his side to help him out in figuring them out.
Other then any jealousy over Rictor, Shatterstar is slow to anger, which has to do with the lack of emotional investment in things that most people on Earth do. He is obsessed with TV, and spends a large amount of time sitting in front of one, watching it, for hours at a time. Pop culture is a huge part of his life, and he’ll use lines from famous movies he’s seen during battle, as well as try to act out different scenes from them. He’ll watch anything and everything, from the worst B horror movies to those long, artistically drawn out movies that last nine hours long. But, because of this, he can be a little disconnected from reality. Life can be just another sitcom to Shatterstar, and he can still be surprised that there’s no laugh track playing, or the perfect song to start playing during a moment that clearly deserves one.
That said, insults and attacks on teammates and any comments about the brand around his eye will get him riled up, though. But for Shatterstar, there’s a lot in life that he still wants to do, and things he still wants to feel. Having freedom to do what he wants to, and people who are willing to help him figure these things out, means the world to him. He may have started as an emotionless warrior, but it’s not how he is now.
Setting: Panem is pretty much Mojoworld, but with slightly better looking people in it. Shatterstar isn’t going to be pleased about being back in a world that forces people to fight for entertainment, but he also won’t be surprised by it. And the fact that he’s suddenly ended up in a strange new world won’t faze him that much, either. He’s very used to alternate universes and otherworldly/other universe jumping. Shatterstar might actually be a little excited about this place. The way the world is set up, and the fact that there are TV screens everywhere, and he can fight in different places makes it all very appealing to him. The dying part and being revived each time, not so much, but he’s pretty good with rolling with the punches, so to speak. And there's a lot more freedom here then there was back on Mojoworld, even if it's been taken away from him again.

First Person Thread: [Waking up in a strange place wasn’t a new experience for him, so he wasn’t too freaked out about that portion. What he wasn’t used to was dying and then being brought back to life, and so he was a little upset about this whole thing.]
Did you run out of people to fight, and that is why you bring us back? [Shatterstar gets up from his seat, arms raised, palms to the sky.] I am ready to be entertaining! I am most displeased with my loss, now I am here and not in there!
[Not quite where that might have been going, and he puts both hands on his hips with a frown.] You ask me my feelings, but I see no one to tell them to. You ask me to stand here and talk to no one while the lure of battle is right outside these doors. You take away my freedom, my swords, my life, and then ask of my loss, and I will not stand for it!
[In his mind, that speech should be met with a crowd cheering with rousing applause. But there’s silence, and he waits for a moment before sighing.] If my ratings were not on top, then I will eat a fashionable piece of tough cloth constructed for someone’s head!
Prose: Considering the last thing Shatterstar remembered from back on Earth was them being in Hell, and dying, he’d have to say that the sun was definitely coming out today instead of tomorrow. Placed in front of this group of people who were all set to judge him on his fighting skills, he felt more in his element then he had anywhere else in the multiverse. Fighting, he knew how to do. Killing other people, he knew how to do. It was what he was born to do, you could say, something that he was bred for. Fighting for the entertainment of others.
He wasn’t sure why they needed to be scored, though. Impressing these people would be easy, but needing a score? Either you killed, or were killed. He didn’t think you needed a score to help you figure that out, all you needed was the will of a warrior, and a good hunk of steel. Or glass. Or rock. Or your bare hands, really, whatever worked out best for you. Just the idea begged the question of where his swords were, but that wasn’t going to help him out much now.
"Hel~lo, I’m Shatterstar." There was the biggest, most charming smile on the redhead’s face, and while he wasn’t seeing one reflected back at him by anyone in the audience, that didn’t deter him in the least. Walking over to the table, he folded his arms across his chest, tilting his head slightly to the side.
"Impressive array of weapons. I am pleased to see there are no guns." He never did like guns, even if he could fire off eight shots and hit the target dead center each time. Shatterstar just never saw the point to them; there was nothing honorable in standing back and watching someone die from a momentary burst of power in your hand. No, what you needed was to get right up close to your opponent, then reach in and...
Picking up a sword, he twirled it, testing the weight. Finding it suitable, he turned to the dummies they had set up.
"You could not find real people to test our skills with?" Shatterstar looked at the audience in dismay, almost pouting before sighing. Then, in a rush, he attacked, hacking off fake limbs and heads, until there was nothing left standing of any dummy in the room. It was over in only a few minutes. Striding back to the table, he tossed the sword onto it, looking at the audience (it would always be an audience, in his mind) and giving them a slow nod.
"I am expecting top ratings." He declared to the group before turning and leaving. Shatterstar thought his team would be proud of him for doing that. It was very dramatic, and drama was always a fan favorite.
What is your character scored: Shatterstar would be scored a 12. He is a genenticlly perfected gladiator, who spent most of his life fighting in arena type settings. He was created specifically for the purpose of fighting and killing other people who had also been created specifically for that, and he never lost a single battle. He knows how to fight with a variety of weapons, and always finds some way to survive. He doesn’t hesitate on killing people, whether it’s in self defense or not. Shatterstar is also an entertainer, and has a big personality to match his fighting skills. He’s charming, good looking, and very happy to make out with anyone with good looks.
He also has some abilities and mutations, such as:
Superhuman enhancements: Created for fighting, he has increased stamina, endurance, strength, flexibility, reflexes, agility, and coordination and balance. His bones are hollow, which allows him to move more quickly. He also has accelerated healing for minor injuries, and while anything major would take longer to heal, it is less then a normal human’s.
Vibratory shock-waves: He can create vibratory shock-waves by converting sonic frequencies around him and channeling that power into his swords, or another metal weapon. This uses up a lot of energy, though, which is why he rarely uses this ability, preferring to rely on his fighting skills.
Teleportation: Shatterstar can create portals that can transport groups across space. He has to have an “anchor” to help him do this, as well as his blades. But the anchor has to be with someone who he has a close, emotional connection with, and if he isn’t focused, the portal could collapse and kill everyone. The energy required for this takes it out of him, though, and he requires four hours or so of rest before he can go again.
Token: He would want his mystical dual-blade swords, but since he can't have those, he'll have the belt with the X symbol on it.
